Iconic buildings but a welfare mentality
History has been kind to Bendigo. The city has many iconic gold rush buildings and a great 'Talking Tram' service connecting Central Deborah Gold Mine and North Bendigo's Chinese Joss House, via Pall Mall and Lake Weeonna, the latter suffering from the drought, a repeated feature of Australian life for 150 years. Unfortunately central Bendigo has Australia's worst mall, panned by locals and visitors alike. It also has numbers of young people (both sexes) who congregate at the west end of this Hargreaves Street mall. The police are invisible and decline to move them on - at least until someone comes to harm.
